Nightmare Zone has a strange legacy. Released as a rewards minigame in 2013, it quickly became the default answer to the question "how do I get combat XP without paying attention?" Nearly a decade later it still holds that role, but the "right" way to use it has changed. Some players treat NMZ as a point-generating resource shop, while others live in it for weeks at a time. This guide is about knowing which is which.

Whether you're a main looking for low-effort melee levels, a pure avoiding defence XP, or an ironman chasing imbues, the same decisions appear: absorption vs prayer, normal vs hard rumble, points now or XP now. We'll break down the mechanics, the optimal setups, and the point values so you can stop reading and start dreaming.

Requirements and Getting Started
You don't need to be maxed to benefit from NMZ, but a few quests and stats turn it from a chore into a semi-afk dream. The minigame is run by Dominic Onion, a mage from Lunar Isle, and can be reached quickly via the Minigame teleport or Grouping teleport.
Complete at least five of these quests: The Ascent of Arceuus, Contact!, The Corsair Curse, The Depths of Despair, Desert Treasure I, Dragon Slayer I, Dream Mentor, Fairytale I - Growing Pains, Family Crest, Fight Arena, The Fremennik Isles, Getting Ahead, The Grand Tree, The Great Brain Robbery, Grim Tales, Haunted Mine, Holy Grail, Horror from the Deep, In Search of the Myreque, Legends' Quest, Lost City, Lunar Diplomacy, Monkey Madness I, Mountain Daughter, My Arm's Big Adventure, One Small Favour, Recipe for Disaster, Roving Elves, Shadow of the Storm, Shilo Village, Song of the Elves, Tale of the Righteous, Tree Gnome Village, Troll Romance, Troll Stronghold, Vampyre Slayer, What Lies Below, Witch's House.
Recommended stats: 43+ Prayer, 51+ Hitpoints, and 60+ in your melee stats for absorption/overload runs. 70/75+ gives noticeably better rates, and 86+ Attack/Strength unlocks the top scaling brackets.
Don't worry if you're missing some quests—only five are required to start. But the bosses you can select depend on completed quests, and some bosses are far more annoying than others. The optimal setups below assume you've unlocked the easy, low-defence quest bosses that make AFK melee comfortable.
How NMZ Runs and Points Work
The Nightmare Zone is an instanced dream of the King Black Dragon Lair. You pay a fee with coins, choose a game mode, and then fight waves of bosses from your completed quests. Points are earned for dealing damage, and the amount scales with monster difficulty and the rumble type.

Practice mode is exactly what it sounds like—no points, no risk. Endurance mode throws a fixed list of bosses at you, and Rumble is the main event. Rumble can be normal or hard, and custom rumble allows you to select exactly which bosses spawn. Hard rumble increases point rewards but also monster stats, which means more absorption drain and slower kills for XP-focused players.
Power-ups appear during fights: Power Surge lets you use special attacks without draining the special bar, Zapper damages all active bosses, and Ultimate Force deals one large hit to a monster you have damaged. For pure point farming, you'll want to use Ultimate Force on high-value bosses when possible.
The 1 HP Absorption Method
The core of AFK NMZ is the absorption potion trick. Absorption costs 1,000 reward points per dose and absorbs the next 50 damage you would take, stacking up to 1,000 damage. It blocks all incoming hits, but it does not block self-inflicted damage from overloads, poison karambwans, dwarven rock cakes, or locator orbs.

To make absorption last as long as possible, you lower your Hitpoints to 1 using a dwarven rock cake or locator orb, then flick the Rapid Heal prayer on and off at least once per minute to prevent natural regeneration. At 1 HP, every boss hit can only deal 1 damage, so each absorption point can absorb an entire hit. At 2 HP, a max hit of 2 drains points twice as fast, so staying at 1 HP is a massive efficiency boost.
Overloads are the other half of the optimal setup. Each dose costs 1,500 points and boosts Attack, Strength, and Defence like a super combat potion, but with a stronger Ranged and Magic boost equivalent to a ranging potion and saturated heart. The catch? Overloads deal damage over several seconds and require at least 51 Hitpoints to drink. Never use a rock cake or locator orb while the overload damage is still ticking, or you will drop to 0 and die.

You can also flick Rapid Heal with a prayer bonus setup; the same muscle memory applies to prayer flicking at the Chaos Temple, but NMZ only requires a single flick per minute, not constant attention.
AFK vs Efficient: XP and Points Side by Side
Your choice of rumble type and supply strategy changes everything. Normal rumble gives the best XP and AFK time with absorption because monsters have lower defence and damage. Hard rumble gives noticeably more points but fewer kills per hour and requires more absorption. However, points are generally sustainable in normal rumble after your first few runs; you'll earn enough to keep buying absorption and overloads while still banking a profit.
| Method | Attention | Key supplies | Melee XP/hr | Points/hr | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AFK absorption (normal rumble, 1 HP, overload) | Very low — flick Rapid Heal every ~60s, re-pot overload | Absorption, overload, dwarven rock cake / locator orb | Lower than prayer method; scales with gear and levels | Sustainable profit after initial buy-in | Long AFK sessions while working or on an alt |
| Prayer + absorption optimised (normal rumble, Piety) | Moderate — manage prayer points, repot, flick | Prayer potions, absorption, overload optional | Up to ~90k/hr | Up to ~400k/hr | Maximising melee XP with decent points |
| Hard custom rumble (points focus) | Moderate — tougher bosses, more absorption drain | More absorption, overload, prayer if needed | ~50k-80k/hr at lower levels, scaling higher | ~250k/hr at lower levels, scales with Attack/Strength | Banking points for imbues or herb boxes |
If you want the best of both worlds, use normal custom rumble with easy bosses and the absorption method, plus Piety if you don't mind sipping prayer potions. At high levels with good prayer bonus, this can approach 90k melee XP and 400k points per hour, but it's no longer fully AFK.
Where NMZ Points Actually Pay Off
Points are worthless until you spend them. The reward shop near Dominic Onion sells resources, imbues, and scrolls. Resource values vary wildly—herb boxes are the standout, while things like seaweed or vials of water are almost never worth buying unless you're desperate.
| Reward | Cost (points) | GE value | GP/point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air rune | 25 | 6 | 0.24 |
| Water rune | 25 | 6 | 0.24 |
| Earth rune | 25 | 5 | 0.20 |
| Fire rune | 25 | 6 | 0.24 |
| Rune essence | 60 | 13 | 0.22 |
| Herb box | 9,500 | ~7,161.60 | 0.75 |
| Pure essence / Bucket of sand / Seaweed / Flax / Vial of water | various | low | ≤0.05 |
Imbues are the other major point sink. Imbuing a black mask creates the infamous slayer helm (i) with ranged and magic damage bonuses, and imbued Fremennik rings double their combat stats. If you haven't imbued your main gear yet, spending points on resources is a waste—get the permanent upgrades first.
For ironmen, the shop is more limited—they can only buy scrolls of redirection from the resource tab, but they can still use points for imbues just like anyone else.
Common Mistakes That Burn Points
Most point waste comes from sloppy execution in the dream. Here's what to avoid:
- Rock caking to 1 HP while overload damage is active. The overload's self-damage will kill you and end the dream early, losing all potential points.
- Letting your HP regenerate above 1. Each point of HP above 1 increases the max hit you can receive, draining absorption much faster.
- Forgetting to flick Rapid Heal every minute. Without the flick, your HP will regen and absorption points vanish quickly.
- Using hard rumble when you need XP. Hard rumble is for points; normal rumble is better XP and more AFK. Pick the mode for your goal.
- Buying herb boxes before essential imbues. Herb boxes are good money, but an unimbued slayer helm costs you DPS everywhere.
- Enabling Dream Mentor without Desert Treasure I. That single toggle can slash your point gain by 6x.
- Not using Ultimate Force on Slayer tasks. In the main game, NMZ Slayer training gives reduced XP, but using Ultimate Force after damaging a task monster maximises the kill count per dream.
Time and Cost Tradeoffs
NMZ is not the only AFK combat method, but it is one of the best for raw melee XP without much attention. It competes with crabs for pure AFK, but NMZ offers points and no competition for spawns. The main cost is supplies: absorption and overloads come from points, but prayer potions, if you use the prayer method, are a recurring gold sink.
Gear matters more than most players admit. At 92+ Hitpoints, Dharok's greataxe with the full set is the optimal point and XP setup because the set bonus scales with missing HP, and the 1 HP trick keeps you at maximum damage potential without risk. Below 92 HP, obsidian armour with a berserker necklace and toktz-xil-ak is the best budget alternative. For pure prayer bonus setups, proselyte or monk robes help stretch prayer potions further.
If your only goal is to train Defence without gaining melee combat XP, splash-based training like defensive magic splashing may be a better fit. But for balanced melee stats, NMZ wins on points and convenience.
Supplies cost gold, and if you're short on funds, buying gold is an honest shortcut to skip the moneymaking grind and get straight into training. You can also buy a pre-trained account or a boosting service, but that's beyond the scope of this guide—just know the option exists if the AFK method isn't for you.
Practical Next Step: Your First Efficient Rumble
Ready to set up a dream properly? Follow this sequence:
- Unlock the recommended quest bosses (easy, low-defence ones like Count Draynor, King Roald, Trapped Soul, Sand Snake, etc.).
- Buy a few absorption and overload potions from the reward chest with any points you already have. If you have none, do a short normal rumble with prayer potions until you earn enough.
- Start a custom normal rumble with your easiest bosses. Bring 4 overloads, 20 absorption potions, a dwarven rock cake or locator orb, and a special attack weapon for Power Surge.
- During the 25-second countdown, drink a dose of overload, then drink absorption until you have 1,000 absorption points. Use the rock cake or locator orb to drop to 1 HP, but wait until the overload's damage has finished ticking.
- Flick Rapid Heal on and off every 60 seconds. Attack bosses as they spawn, using Power Surge specials when available.
- Bank when overload runs out or absorption gets low. Rinse and repeat.

How many NMZ points per hour can you get?
With overloads on hard customisable rumbles, expect around 250,000 points per hour at lower levels, scaling higher as your Attack and Strength rise. Normal rumbles with prayer and absorption can reach up to 400,000 points per hour if you're optimised, but most AFK setups will earn somewhat less.
Is Nightmare Zone still the best AFK combat XP in OSRS?
For melee, yes—NMZ remains one of the top low-effort options because it gives zero competition, uses cheap absorption potions, and offers points. Ranged and magic can also be trained in NMZ with chins or barrage, but those require specific quest bosses and are less AFK than melee absorption.
What is the 1 HP absorption method?
You lower your Hitpoints to 1 using a dwarven rock cake or locator orb, then flick Rapid Heal once per minute to prevent regeneration. At 1 HP, every monster hit can only deal 1 damage, so each absorption point blocks an entire hit. This makes one dose of absorption last far longer.
How do you get your first NMZ points?
Start with a normal rumble using prayer potions and protection prayers if you have no absorption/overloads. Attack bosses and collect points. Once you have enough for a few absorption and overload potions, switch to the 1 HP absorption method and sustain from there.
What should you spend NMZ points on first?
Prioritise imbues for your main gear—black mask (i), salve amulet (i), Fremennik rings (i)—because those are permanent combat upgrades. After that, herb boxes are the best resource value at 0.75 GP/point. Avoid cheap resources like seaweed or buckets of sand unless you have no better use.
Does Nightmare Zone work for ranged or magic training?
Yes, but it's usually less AFK than melee. You can chin or burst certain bosses if you've completed quests like Desert Treasure I and Dream Mentor. The strategies page doesn't cover these in depth, so verify current best bosses on the wiki before committing supplies.
Can you die in Nightmare Zone to overloads?
Yes. Overload damage hits over several seconds and ignores absorption. If you rock cake to 1 HP while the overload is still damaging you, you can die. Always wait for the damage-over-time effect to finish before lowering your Hitpoints.
