Magic on an ironman is not just a skill; it is the engine behind high-alchemy cash flow, teleport unlocks, enchanting, and eventually the barrage damage that makes high-level Slayer and bossing tolerable. The challenge is that every nature rune, cosmic rune, and law rune has to come from somewhere—shop runs, runecrafting, drops, or minigame rewards. This guide lays out a balanced route from level 1 to the 77 and 94 milestones, combining quest experience, MTA unlocks, Slayer combat, and utility spells without burning through your entire rune stack.

Ironman Guide/Magic
Ironman Guide/Magic — OSRS Wiki

We will treat efficiency not as a single meta but as a set of tradeoffs: attention, rune cost, time-to-goal, and account progression. Where an AFK method saves your sanity but costs more runes, or where a minigame unlock like Bones to Peaches pays for itself over hundreds of Slayer tasks, the decision points are spelled out. Along the way, we note when buying gold or a service is an honest shortcut for a main account—and why ironmen need a different approach.

Who This Guide Is For and What You'll Need

This guide is aimed at ironmen who want to push Magic efficiently without ignoring the rest of the account. It assumes you have access to the standard spellbook, some starting cash for runes, and a willingness to do a mix of active and low-attention methods. If you are a hardcore or ultimate ironman, the same route works but with even stricter bank management; adjust accordingly.

Essential unlocks and supplies:

  • Runes: mind, air, water, earth, fire, body, cosmic, nature, law, and later death/blood for bursting.
  • Staves: an elemental staff from Zaff's Staffs to cover elemental rune costs; later a staff that provides unlimited air or water runes depending on your spell choice.
  • Quests: Witch's Potion, Imp Catcher, The Grand Tree, Watchtower, and The Giant Dwarf for early experience (20,100 total XP to reach level 34).
  • Mage Training Arena: nature runes, cosmic runes, law runes, and elemental staves or runes; level 33 Magic to access all four rooms.
  • Bursting: 65+ Magic, multi-combat Slayer tasks, and a sufficient stock of death and blood runes (or a suitable staff).

If your goal is only 77 Magic for utility spells or 94 for barrage-tier combat, the balance between these methods shifts. We'll revisit that in the time/cost section.

Levels 1–34: Skip the Splash, Quest It

The fastest early Magic experience on an ironman comes from quests, not from splashing. The following sequence, completed in order, requires minimal combat and safe-spotting, and the experience rewards push you straight to level 34 Magic without spending a single rune:

  • Witch's Potion – 325 XP, kill a level 1 rat.
  • Imp Catcher – 875 XP, collect beads from level 2 imps.
  • The Grand Tree – 2,150 XP, safe-spot a level 172 black demon with 25 Agility (boostable).
  • Watchtower – 15,250 XP, with requirements in Magic, Herblore, Mining, and Agility (all boostable).
  • The Giant Dwarf – 1,500 XP, no combat but some skill requirements.

The total is 20,100 Magic XP, which lands you at level 34. Even if you cannot complete The Grand Tree or Watchtower immediately, doing Witch's Potion and Imp Catcher first gives a comfortable head start for strike spells and Telekinetic Grab at 33.

Tip: If you are a hardcore ironman, safe-spotting the black demon in The Grand Tree is very doable with fire strike and a full inventory of food. Quest XP also avoids early rune costs, which matters more than it seems.

Levels 33–43: Combat, Slayer, and the Splashing Debate

Once you have Telekinetic Grab at 33, you can access all MTA rooms, but before committing to that grind it is often better to use combat spells on Slayer tasks. Early Slayer monsters drop alchables, herbs, seeds, and pure essence—resources that feed your later training. Use the best strike spell you can afford with an elemental staff to reduce rune consumption.

If you need a low-attention option, splashing is viable but expensive. Strike spells are the best value for splashing because the runes are cheap and shop-buyable. Good splash targets include sand crabs in Hosidius (no requirements), ammonite crabs on Fossil Island after Bone Voyage, and frost crabs in the Ruins of Tapoyauik after The Heart of Darkness; frost crabs have a 100% fire weakness. For a truly AFK experience, gemstone crabs in Varlamore allow up to 10 minutes of autocast AFK after completing Children of the Sun.

However, splashing does not advance Slayer, Hitpoints (much), or drops. The opportunity cost is real. For players who can give full attention, use these levels to train Slayer while casting combat spells on tasks. For an AFK-focused look at splashing and curse alching, see our OSRS F2P Magic Training guide.

Monsters Worth Your Runes

Not all early Slayer targets are equal. The following monsters provide magic XP plus useful drops:

MonsterLocationNotable benefit
Zamorak warriorsOurania CaveRune scimitar drop
Blue dragonsTaverley DungeonDragon bones for Prayer, slower XP
Lava dragonsDeep WildernessLava dragon bones and rune items, but PK risk
Twisted bansheesCatacombs of KourendAlchables, herbs, seeds, pure essence; 15 Slayer required
Ogress WarriorsCorsair Cove DungeonAlchables and gems; can be fought in F2P

Early money for those rune stacks can come from the Stronghold of Security (10,000 coins), Wintertodt, Thieving, collecting and selling Eclipse Red in Varlamore, or the Agility Pyramid. Do not underestimate how many mind and chaos runes you will burn through at this stage.

Warning: Lava dragons are a classic ironman rune source, but you will be in multi-combat Wilderness. Bring only what you are willing to lose, and never skull yourself accidentally.

Levels 43–55: Superheat Item and the Alchemy Gateway

From level 43, Superheat Item turns gold ore into gold bars—or iron ore into iron bars—for both Magic and Smithing XP. It is expensive in nature runes but gives you a use for ore you might otherwise bank and forget. Many ironmen cast Superheat Item as they mine or after buying ore from shops to combine two grinds.

At level 55, High Level Alchemy becomes the backbone of ironman cash flow. You will alch unstrung maple longbows, gold bracelets, gold bars, battlestaves, and nearly every alchable drop from Slayer. Alching while doing farm runs, quest travel, or even Agility laps effectively makes Magic XP zero-time—a core ironman efficiency habit.

Tip: Keep a dedicated alch stack of noted items that profit or break even after nature rune cost. Never alch items you need for quests, clues, or future training.

Mage Training Arena: Unlocking Bones to Peaches and More

The Mage Training Arena is the single most important Magic minigame for an ironman, not because of raw XP per hour but because of the unlocks. You need at least level 7 Magic to enter, and level 33 to use all four rooms. Bring nature runes, cosmic runes, law runes, and elemental staves to cover the basic runes. The four rooms are Telekinetic Theatre, Creature Graveyard, Enchanting Chamber, and Alchemist's Playground.

The priority for ironmen is Bones to Peaches. Unlocking it first almost doubles the speed at which you earn points in the Creature Graveyard, because you can use Bones to Peaches instead of Bones to Bananas. After that, the mage's book and master wand are luxury upgrades; infinity boots are situational and often skipped.

ItemLaw runesNature runesCosmic runesApprox. time
Bones to Peaches3531,0758102.6 hours
Mage's book8832,0642,4305.3 hours
Master wand (effective total)480 Telekinetic, 480 Graveyard, 4,800 Enchantment, 530 Alchemist pointsNot listed; verify current estimates

These estimates assume the most points per cast (not fastest points per hour), staves covering elemental runes, and no free alch casts. If you plan to get anything besides Bones to Peaches, do Bones to Peaches first. For a full completion of all rewards at least once, expect roughly 4,682 law runes, 13,000 nature runes, and 2,000–6,000 cosmic runes, with a total rune cost in the 2.6–3.1 million coin range depending on enchant spell used.

Don't forget: Clue scrolls and caskets cannot enter any MTA room. Coins and coin pouches are banned from the Alchemist's Playground, and bananas/peaches are banned from the Creature Graveyard. Bank them first.

Levels 65–99: Bursting, Slayer, and Passive Magic

Once you have high enough Magic and access to multi-combat Slayer tasks, bursting or barraging becomes the most efficient Magic XP per hour while also progressing Slayer and collecting drops. The exact tasks to burst depend on your block list, Slayer level, and available areas, so check the wiki for current best tasks. As you gain levels, some bossing and Slayer monsters will drop enough alchables and runes to partially fund further casting.

Passive training also matters: High Alchemy, Superglass Make, Plank Make, and other utility spells can turn skilling activities into Magic XP without dedicated training time. At level 86, Plank Make offers an alternative to alching for some account builds, but it requires nature and astral runes and is only worth it if you need planks anyway.

The Arceuus Library is another oddball method that can provide free Magic XP if you enjoy the maze-like book fetching loop; it is not meta but is low-cost and can be done while watching content.

Common Mistakes on an Ironman Magic Grind

  • Over-splashing early: Splashing at low levels burns runes without Slayer XP or drops. Use quests first, then combat spells on tasks.
  • Ignoring Bones to Peaches: The Graveyard room without Peaches is painfully slow. Unlock it first, even if you only want the mage's book later.
  • Alching junk: Alching items that lose money relative to nature rune cost is a trap. Maintain an alch list from Slayer drops and battlestaves.
  • Bringing prohibited items to MTA: Clue scrolls, coins, bananas—each will get you stopped at the door. Read the room rules.
  • Forgetting to use staves: Carrying four elemental runes instead of staves increases rune cost massively in MTA and general training.
  • Skipping utility spells: Superheat Item and High Alchemy may feel like side-grades, but they turn other grinds into zero-time Magic XP.

Time and Cost Tradeoffs: What to Buy, What to Skip, and When a Service Makes Sense

For a main account, buying OSRS gold can fund runes for splashing, bursting, and alching, effectively converting real-world money into faster Magic training. The honest shortcut is to view live gold rates and see whether the time saved is worth the cost. For ironmen, gold buying does not work because you cannot trade or receive items; your currency is time and rune generation. That is why MTA unlocks and alching discipline are so important—they are the only way to print runes and gp from your own activities.

Account services that play your character to complete MTA, Slayer tasks, or bursting grinds are against Jagex rules if they involve account sharing. We do not recommend any service that asks for your login details. The legitimate shortcut for ironmen is to optimize the route: quest to 34, MTA for Bones to Peaches, alch during Slayer, then burst high-level tasks. Skipping MTA entirely is possible, but you will feel it every time you need food during a long Slayer trip.

If you are on a main account, purchasing gold to buy runes outright is a valid time-saver, but be aware of market prices and use a reputable source. Always verify current rune costs and XP rates on the wiki before committing to a method.

Practical Next Steps

  1. Complete Witch's Potion and Imp Catcher immediately for 1,200 Magic XP.
  2. Work toward The Grand Tree and Watchtower requirements while doing early Slayer tasks with strike spells.
  3. At 33 Magic, start MTA with Telekinetic Grab and earn Bones to Peaches first.
  4. From 43 Magic, superheat gold ore during mining sessions.
  5. At 55 Magic, build an alch stack from Slayer and daily battlestaves.
  6. At 65+ Magic, identify multi-combat Slayer tasks and start bursting with the best spell you can afford.
  7. Push toward 77 for utility spells and 94 for barrage-tier combat, verifying current requirements on the wiki.

Honest shortcut: Main accounts can buy gold to skip rune grinding. Ironmen must earn every rune. The real efficiency is doing MTA and alching properly, not skipping them.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the fastest way to train Magic on an ironman?

Questing to 34 Magic, then doing Mage Training Arena for Bones to Peaches, and later bursting multi-combat Slayer tasks is the fastest overall route. High Alchemy during Slayer adds zero-time XP. Exact rates depend on rune supply; verify current XP rates on the OSRS Wiki.

  • Should I do Mage Training Arena before or after 55 Magic?

You can start MTA at 33 Magic with Telekinetic Grab, but having High Alchemy at 55 makes the Alchemist's Playground much faster. Many ironmen unlock Bones to Peaches first and then return after 55 for the mage's book or wand.

  • How long does Bones to Peaches take at MTA?

Approximately 2.6 hours if using the most efficient point-per-cast methods. That assumes 353 law runes, 1,075 nature runes, and 810 cosmic runes, with staves covering elemental runes.

  • What are the best items to alch on an ironman?

Unstrung maple longbows, gold bracelets, gold bars, battlestaves, and profitable Slayer drops. Avoid items that lose money after nature rune cost, and keep a dedicated alch stack for zero-time Magic XP during other activities.

  • When should I start bursting Slayer tasks for Magic XP?

Typically at 65+ Magic, when you have access to burst spells and multi-combat tasks. Start with cheaper burst spells and upgrade to barrage later. The best tasks change with your block list and Slayer level; check the wiki for current options.

  • Is splashing worth it on an ironman?

Only if you need low-attention training and have spare mind or chaos runes. It gives no Slayer XP or drops, so it is a tradeoff. Gemstone crabs in Varlamore allow up to 10 minutes of autocast AFK after Children of the Sun.

  • Can ironmen buy gold or use a boosting service for Magic?

Ironmen cannot trade or receive items, so buying gold does not help them. Any service that requires account access is against Jagex rules and risks a ban. The honest shortcut is optimizing the method path, not skipping it.
