The Mage Training Arena sits just north of the Emir's Arena as one of Old School RuneScape's most misunderstood minigames. It does not hand out the fastest Magic XP, and it is not a place you visit for one quick reward. Instead, it is a structured trade: you commit hours of rune-casting across four rooms, earn four types of Pizazz points, and exchange them for unlocks that range from the untradeable Bones to Peaches spell to the Master wand. The order in which you spend those points changes the total grind dramatically.

This guide uses the wiki's own estimates and mechanics to map out the efficient unlock order, show whether Infinity, the mage's book, or Master wand are better bought with gold than earned, and highlight exactly when paying for a service turns a multi-hour grind into a simple decision.

Requirements & Preparation

You only need level 7 Magic to enter the arena, but that lets you cast just one useful spell. The real starting point is level 33 Magic, when you unlock Telekinetic Grab and can take part in all four activities. Higher Magic levels make the Enchanting Chamber faster and sometimes cheaper, with level 87 (Lvl-6 Enchant) being the practical ceiling; level 93 (Lvl-7 Enchant) is technically complete but rarely worth the extra runes.

Minimum setup
  • Magic level: 7 to start, 33 for all four rooms, 87 for the best practical enchant.
  • Runes: Nature runes (Alchemist's Playground and Creature Graveyard), Cosmic runes (Enchanting Chamber), Law runes (Telekinetic Theatre).
  • Elemental coverage: Bring all elemental runes or use staves to replace them. A staff of fire/air/water/earth reduces micro-management.
  • Spells: Telekinetic Grab, Low/High Level Alchemy, your best enchant jewellery spell, and Bones to Bananas or Bones to Peaches.

Do not bring coins or coin pouches into the Alchemist's Playground, and do not bring bananas or peaches into the Creature Graveyard. Clue scrolls and caskets are also blocked inside the rooms. The lobby is a good place to resupply, but the real convenience is carrying a stackable setup so you never need to bank between rotations.

How the MTA Works: Four Rooms, Four Pizazz Types

Every activity rewards its own Pizazz points: Telekinetic, Graveyard, Enchantment, and Alchemist. You cannot convert one type to another, so each goal requires a deliberate mix. The rooms are simple once you break them down:

  • Telekinetic Theatre: Cast Telekinetic Grab to move a statue through a maze while avoiding guardians. Telekinetic points are mostly needed for wands and cost law runes.
  • Creature Graveyard: Use Bones to Bananas or Bones to Peaches on bones dropped by skeletons to feed a hungry graveyard. Graveyard points are the biggest bottleneck for Bones to Peaches and many gear pieces.
  • Enchanting Chamber: Cast the highest enchant jewellery spell you can on piles of shapes. Enchantment points depend heavily on your Magic level and chosen spell.
  • Alchemist's Playground: Use Low or High Level Alchemy on rotating cupboards to earn coins and Alchemist points. This room burns nature runes fast but offers a small XP return.

Because points are earned independently, efficiency comes from doing each room only when its point-to-rune ratio is best for your current unlock path. That is why the unlock order below starts with Bones to Peaches, not with the cheapest item.

Efficient Unlock Order: B2P First, Then Decide

The single biggest efficiency lever in the Mage Training Arena is the Bones to Peaches spell. The wiki explicitly notes that if you plan to obtain anything besides Bones to Peaches, it is optimal to unlock that spell first because it nearly doubles the speed at which you earn Graveyard points. Without Peaches, you are stuck casting Bones to Bananas, which earns one Graveyard point per cast. Upgrading to Bones to Peaches means the same bone stack yields far more points per trip.

Unlock order rule: Get Bones to Peaches before spending a single point on tradable rewards. Then buy Infinity pieces, the mage's book, or work toward the Master wand only if the extra time is worth the account progression.

After B2P, your next purchase should be based on whether the item is tradeable and what your account actually needs. Infinity robes and the mage's book can usually be bought with gold, so many players skip them in the minigame entirely. The Master wand is a tradeable upgrade with a steep Pizazz cost, and it only makes sense at the account level when you have a specific need for its stats or future upgrades.

Bones to Peaches: The Key Unlock

Bones to Peaches costs a mix of Telekinetic, Graveyard, Enchantment, and Alchemist points, and the wiki estimates the rune bill at roughly 2,613,522 to 3,093,522 coins depending on your enchant spell and whether you buy all runes at current prices. In focused play, the unlock takes approximately 2.6 hours when using the most point-efficient methods. That breaks down to around 353 law runes, 1,075 nature runes, and 810 cosmic runes, assuming staves cover elemental runes and you do not rely on free Alchemist's Playground casts.

The reason this spell is the linchpin is not just the Graveyard points. Bones to Peaches is untradeable, so it cannot be bought on the Grand Exchange. If you want the utility of turning bones into food during long trips or specific PvM situations, you have to earn it. The 2.6-hour estimate assumes you already have level 33+ Magic and a reasonable enchant spell; lower levels will take longer and consume more cosmic runes.

Infinity Robes & Mage's Book: Tradeable Alternatives

The Infinity robe set and the mage's book are popular mid-level Magic gear, but they are also tradeable. Before you commit points, check the Grand Exchange price of the pieces you want. A mage's book may take around 5.3 hours of MTA grind by the wiki's estimates, using roughly 883 law runes, 2,064 nature runes, and 2,430 cosmic runes. That is hours you could spend earning gold through faster methods, then simply buying the book.

Infinity pieces have a similar tradeoff. The robe pieces each require a chunk of Pizazz points, and while they look iconic, the points-per-hour you earn in MTA are generally lower than what you could make doing even modest money-makers. Unless you are an ironman or specifically enjoy the minigame, buying tradeables with GP and reserving Pizazz points for Bones to Peaches is often the wiser plan.

Verify before you grind: GE prices and exact Pizazz costs shift over time. Check the official OSRS Wiki and the in-game rewards shop before deciding whether to earn or buy Infinity pieces and the mage's book.

Master Wand: The Expensive Capstone

The Master wand is the most expensive Magic weapon in the rewards shop, but the listed price is misleading. Wands are upgrades: you must buy the apprentice wand, then the teacher wand, then finally turn in the teacher wand plus additional points for the Master wand. The wiki calculates the effective total as 480 Telekinetic, 480 Graveyard, 4,800 Enchantment, and 530 Alchemist Pizazz points. That is a huge spread across all four rooms, and the Enchantment requirement alone can add many hours.

For most accounts, the Master wand is a skip unless you have a concrete plan. Its Magic bonus is useful, but the time investment is better spent on quests, Slayer, or other training that also progresses the account. If you do want one, it is tradeable, so buying one with gold is almost always faster than earning the points yourself. Only iron accounts or completionists should seriously consider the full grind.

Common Mistakes & Efficiency Traps

  • Buying Infinity or the mage's book before Bones to Peaches. You lock yourself into slow Graveyard points and waste time.
  • Using Lvl-1 Enchant in the Enchanting Chamber at high Magic levels. Higher enchant spells give far more points per cast and save cosmic runes.
  • Bringing coins into the Alchemist's Playground. The room blocks them, so bank first.
  • Treating MTA as a Magic training method. It gives some XP, but it is a point-gathering minigame first. If you want fast Magic XP, use alching or bursting.
  • Forgetting that the Master wand is an upgrade chain, not a flat cost. Many players under-budget the total points needed.
Warning: Do not spend Pizazz points on runes in the rewards shop unless you absolutely need them. The point-to-gold ratio is usually worse than selling the points' worth of time and buying runes on the GE.

MTA vs Other Magic Training: Time and Attention Tradeoffs

The Mage Training Arena is not the place to grind Magic levels. For pure XP, the wiki's Pay-to-play Magic training guide lists much stronger options. Low Level Alchemy can reach around 60,000 XP per hour standing still, Lvl-1 Enchant around 32,000 XP per hour, and enchanting bolts can be much faster but extremely expensive. MTA's XP rates vary by room but generally sit below dedicated training methods because you are paying attention to points, not maximum casts per hour.

MethodAttentionApprox XP/hrCost profileBest for
Lvl-1 EnchantModerate, every 3 ticks~32,000Low cosmic costEarly Magic levels 7–21
Low Level AlchemyLow, can be done while runningUp to 60,000Small loss with cheap itemsPassive training or levels 21–55
Enchanting boltsVery low, stackable and mobileVery high when spam-clickingVery expensiveFast early levels with large GP bank

If your only goal is Magic XP, skip MTA. The minigame earns its keep through account unlocks, not XP rates. For a full breakdown of efficient Magic training paths, see our guide on OSRS Magic Training: Bursting Slayer vs High Alch vs Plank Make to 99.

Time vs Gold: When Buying GP or a Service Is the Honest Shortcut

The MTA grind is a classic time-versus-gold decision. Bones to Peaches cannot be bought, so you either invest the ~2.6 hours and ~2.6–3.1m rune cost, or you accept that the unlock is optional for your account. Tradeable rewards like Infinity robes, the mage's book, and the Master wand do not have that same restriction. If you can make more than a few million GP in the time it would take to earn the points, buying them from the Grand Exchange is the rational play.

For players who want Bones to Peaches but cannot justify the focused time, a leveling or minigame service is an honest option. A skilled helper can complete the unlock while you are offline, and the cost is often comparable to the raw rune bill plus the value of your time. This is not about cheating — it is about respecting that OSRS is a game with different priorities. If you decide to buy gold to fund gear instead of grinding Pizazz points, check live rates below.
